For the last couple of months all the top models have been from the US. I don't expect that to last - or even if it does the gap will gradually diminish to the point that "top" is largely irrelevant outside of marketing.
But at the moment I must use a US model for the best results for complex queries. So I'm glad that there's one company I'm at least somewhat ok with supporting. I'm not even that picky. All I want is a reasonable guarantee that I'm not supporting a company who's tools are used for autonomous drone warfare in American wars, and a few other basic things like that.
I guess someone might feel moved to respond to this by pointing out all the other companies outside of AI that I should be avoiding too. Please do! I'm actively trying to be more mindful of the companies I support rather than just chasing the lowest bills. I'm in the process of migrating my company away from MS 365 to Nextcloud on Hetzner, which is going slow but well.
those systems will be built regardless. That type of boycott being asked from companies is essentially asking companies to not make profit where there's profit to be made, when those doing the asking is not also taking in any sacrifices for this boycott.
Instead of asking companies to be altruistic, those wanting such systems to be illegal should be using the civic system we have today to make it so - yes, this costs effort, resources and time. Like all hard things.
With the price of tokens I think mass surveillance with AI is not a realistic use case.
There already is a mass surveillance. Presumably most electronic communication is monitored. I guess LLMs can likely do a somewhat better job but probably not worth the cost for the marginal benefit over existing technologies?
Similarly for "Terminators" or other AI killing machines... Isn't it cheaper to use a human? We have autonomous weapons already, like cruise missiles... Other than the movies what does a reality with LLMs pulling triggers look like? Cars are also "killing machines" and we're letting computers drive them...
Unfortunately if these things do start making sense for whatever reason they're probably going to happen. Private companies in general have no way to prevent their technology from being used for "defense" applications. Once that genie is out of the bottle it's not going back in.

Folks; there isn't a geopolity agnostic equivalent of incorporation. There is no Anthropic without that grant of incorporation. Even if they wanted to take the most principled stance, they can only push so far, and to have a system that is incompatible with operating a mass surveillance network, it has to be capable of monitoring itself to recognize whether it has been configured in such a way as it's activity is aligned to the activity of mass surveillance. You'd have to build the mass surveillance oracle, which is in and of itself, a mass surveillance machine.
Claude Code seems to be the best at programming right now. I think if Anthropic can maintain or increase their lead they'll have no shortage of customers. I imagine Anthropic's business is driven by business customers rather than individual paying customers at this point.

Something interesting is going on around Trump's rants. Some White House staffers are directing lower-level staff to ignore them and focus on the economy. James Blair [2] seems to be leading this. Blair was in charge of political strategy for Trump's campaign, and he won, so he's probably not going to be fired.
There have been presidents in decline who were semi-captured by their staffs. Biden, Reagan, and Roosevelt all were. It may be that Trump gets trotted out now and then to deliver his standard speech (his speeches all have roughly the same content, regardless of subject or venue), but the work of the White House involves him less.

The part of Dario's response I found funniest was pointing out the inherent contradiction in the DoW threats. Somehow, they could both be a national security threat as well as a national security necessity. Not by doing something differently - at the same time, to the same people, in the same context.
They won’t be brandished as a supply chain risk because the supply chain members are good at lobbying and they like Claude.
As an example, Amazon is a defense contractor and uses Claude heavily internally for development. They are also major investors in Anthropic. Amazon would not want Claude to be banned from use on developing AWS services that may be cross sold to the government. Multiply this by every defense company that uses Claude (eg anduril and Palantir).
They could totally try and punish Anthropic executives of course. That seems likely.

What I don't get is why they really want it. I can't think of a worse platform in general to do anything with combat that is, anything in a data-center. I would take the Quake 3 Arena engine on a new ultra insane mode combined with a tiny self hosted model to detect humans, uniforms, vehicle make and model plus a simple Friend or Foe over all the big AI platforms any day. Add an optional feed from an encrypted meshtastic like network to sync nodes using pre-defined Ostiary like commands. Ultra-fast, light-weight on all resources, decentralized.
The enemy could neutralize all the big platforms in one day by simply activating a few dozen of the sleeper agents in the US or a couple High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) deployed by a few stratospheric balloons as China flew over every major military installation in the US. Adding to this having a network dependency to the big platforms from autonomous weapons is an extreme vulnerability. Any design that depends on a central command is a single point of success.

Grok is quite good for explaining tweets, summarizing meme videos and chatting about celebrities. But chat and image inference only, it was performing really poor in agentic work the last time I tried.
Sounds like they also have the same limitations. And my guess is that thats non-negotiable as that would likely cause some of their staff to quit if they did lift those limitations.

I agree completely. Anybody who uses the models extensively know it can do something amazing for a prompt and something awful for another. But I also know that wars are unfortunately real and there are real enemies between countries and they don't want a limited model.

This should come as no surprise. The administration has no tolerance for anyone with “values” or “scruples” that challenge their power. They fired Judge Advocate Generals (military lawyers) that refused to authorize strikes on civilian boats, for one recent example. If you say ‘no’ for any reason, they fire you.
I think it has also been pretty clear from the beginning of his current term that the primary principle of this administration is to pass whatever has been paid for. E.g. the literally hundreds of executive orders that he started signing en masse the moment he got elected, none of which were written in his style or pen or even possible to write in such volume for a single person in a single day.
It's done worse in this area. Biden administration refused contracts with any company that didn't require all in-person employees to get the covid19 vaccine, so the firing extended down to the employees. The courts stopped this when boosters got added to the requirement.

I wouldnt want an AI model to hold my military hostage. DOD should have strong requirements when making contracts with AI companies, including having the models be on their own infrastructure, fully locked down with a master prompt they can see and update.

For the last couple of months all the top models have been from the US. I don't expect that to last - or even if it does the gap will gradually diminish to the point that "top" is largely irrelevant outside of marketing.
But at the moment I must use a US model for the best results for complex queries. So I'm glad that there's one company I'm at least somewhat ok with supporting. I'm not even that picky. All I want is a reasonable guarantee that I'm not supporting a company who's tools are used for autonomous drone warfare in American wars, and a few other basic things like that.

Folks; there isn't a geopolity agnostic equivalent of incorporation. There is no Anthropic without that grant of incorporation. Even if they wanted to take the most principled stance, they can only push so far, and to have a system that is incompatible with operating a mass surveillance network, it has to be capable of monitoring itself to recognize whether it has been configured in such a way as it's activity is aligned to the activity of mass surveillance. You'd have to build the mass surveillance oracle, which is in and of itself, a mass surveillance machine.
Claude Code seems to be the best at programming right now. I think if Anthropic can maintain or increase their lead they'll have no shortage of customers. I imagine Anthropic's business is driven by business customers rather than individual paying customers at this point.

Something interesting is going on around Trump's rants. Some White House staffers are directing lower-level staff to ignore them and focus on the economy. James Blair [2] seems to be leading this. Blair was in charge of political strategy for Trump's campaign, and he won, so he's probably not going to be fired.
There have been presidents in decline who were semi-captured by their staffs. Biden, Reagan, and Roosevelt all were. It may be that Trump gets trotted out now and then to deliver his standard speech (his speeches all have roughly the same content, regardless of subject or venue), but the work of the White House involves him less.

Somehow, they could both be a national security threat as well as a national security necessity. Not by doing something differently - at the same time, to the same people, in the same context.

As an example, Amazon is a defense contractor and uses Claude heavily internally for development. They are also major investors in Anthropic. What I don't get is why they really want it. I can't think of a worse platform in general to do anything with combat that is, anything in a data-center. I would take the Quake 3 Arena engine on a new ultra insane mode combined with a tiny self hosted model to detect humans, uniforms, vehicle make and model plus a simple Friend or Foe over all the big AI platforms any day. Add an optional feed from an encrypted meshtastic like network to sync nodes using pre-defined Ostiary like commands. Ultra-fast, light-weight on all resources, decentralized.
The enemy could neutralize all the big platforms in one day by simply activating a few dozen of the sleeper agents in the US or a couple High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) deployed by a few stratospheric balloons as China flew over every major military installation in the US. Adding to this having a network dependency to the big platforms from autonomous weapons is an extreme vulnerability. Any design that depends on a central command is a single point of success.

Elon mentioned they will be releasing a cli coding tool for grok similar to Claude Code, will be interesting to see how it performs given they have their own datacenter (largest in the world and building another larger one)

The function of fully autonomous AI weaponry is to offload the responsibility for making kill decisions away from the soldier.

For anybody who thinks it's about Trump vs other administration: it's not, both AI surveillance of all people and using it for automatic fight was just bound to happen.
The only question is whether the safety of the models were really done well enough to protect the people and be a net positive force in the world.
I guess if they would be safely trained to do more good than bad (how Dario and SamA said), there wouldn't even be a need for the contract terms.
It would/will be extremely irresponsible to put non-deterministic and fallible models in charge of weapons. We are not close to having solved the problem of ensuring AI pursues good outcomes
I agree completely. Anybody who uses the models extensively know it can do something amazing for a prompt and something awful for another. But I also know that wars are unfortunately real and there are real enemies between countries and they don't want a limited model.

Anthropic's statement specified mass domestic surveillance. Not all domestic surveillance. And fully autonomous weapons with today's systems. Not automatic targeting. And not never.
Not targeting, automatic firing. They want a human to chose when to fire, but they AI can so the targeting.
But.. we already have automatic weapons targeting systems and the PATRIOT act, which enjoys bi-partisan support already providing basically limitless domestic surveillance.

Agreed, but the details released so far are pretty sparse on what exactly was being asked. If they're resisting general AI to help missiles find their target better, then I think it's pretty foolish of Anthropic to resist because that's happening come hell or high water. If it's about resisting mass surveileance without a warrant of American citizens, then I'd cheer Anthropic on for pulling out, but we just don't know apparently.
The Department of Defense demanded contracts which would allow any lawful use. Anthropic refused to allow mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons until fully autonomous weapons could be more reliable.[1]

The only two things anthropic ask is that AI cannot be used for:
- domestic mass surveillance,
- autonomous kill decision.
That's it. The reason for the first one is clear: it violate the spirit of the fourth amendment at least.
The reason for the second is that if a kill decision is taken, let's say by an ICE agent who just got told 'im not mad at you' or something similar that would surely enrage him, he is responsible in front of the law. If it's an autonomous drone that shoots on political opponent/protestors, no one is responsible.
I will add that Google and anthropic made their AI play wargames. 93% of the time, their models escalate to the nuclear option.

This should come as no surprise. The administration has no tolerance for anyone with “values” or “scruples” that challenge their power. They fired Judge Advocate Generals (military lawyers) that refused to authorize strikes on civilian boats, for one recent example. If you say ‘no’ for any reason, they fire you.
I think it has also been pretty clear from the beginning of his current term that the primary principle of this administration is to pass whatever has been paid for. (For those who don't know the history, Xerox Parc and SRI before them invented the modern PC GUI and a lot of other modern PC stuff in the late 70s and early 80s, which Apple copied and then everyone else copied from Apple. Xerox paid a lot for R&D but never used it at all since it would cannibalize their copier business, classic innovators dilemma.)

I wouldnt want an AI model to hold my military hostage. DOD should have strong requirements when making contracts with AI companies, including having the models be on their own infrastructure, fully locked down with a master prompt they can see and update.
Nobody would have an issue with that. The problem here is DoD insisting on that kind of control, then threatening and retaliating against Anthropic for declining to participate rather than simply walking away and engaging with a competitor.
